I want to share my Yeti and some history.

I started mountain biking in the 80's and I have owned over 20 bikes. Some of which I should have never sold, including, a 1989 Fat Chance Yo Eddy and a 1995 Klein Adroit. I get sick every time I think about my 1992 Yeti ARC which was stolen. I miss all three bikes. My ASR is the bike I will never get rid of. It is as close to a perfect bike for me as I will ever find. I am the original owner from 2003. Most of the parts were state of the art back in 2003 and 2004. I guess the bike is becoming “old school”, but everything works so well I do not see a reason to “upgrade”. This is my 2003 ASR-SL:

  • · Frame-Large
  • · Mavic Cross Max wheels
  • · Hope Skewers
  • · XTR components
  • · Avid Ti V-Brakes
  • · Egg Beater pedals
  • · PAUL Components Love Handle brake leavers. I have owned them since 1996 and they still work flawlessly! (told you... old school)
  • · Thomson Elite seat post and stem
  • · King head set
  • · Easton Monkey lite bars
  • · ODI Yeti grips
  • · Rock Shox SID with RWC wipers and seals

So, a little history. I saw this 2003/2004 Yeti ASR-SL frame advertised on Yetifan back in November 2007. It was advertised as a 'special' staff members bike with a unique frame number. The exchange rate was great back then so a deal was done and the frame was shipped. I had confirmation from the actual staff member at Yeti that this used to be his bike, and actually his brother wanted to buy it back off me! Spent another year finding the best parts I could:

  • - Tune / DT Swiss Wheels
  • - Pace RC39 Type C Forks
  • - Chris King Headset
  • - Thomson Stem and Seatpost
  • - Avid Juicy Ultimate brakes
  • - DT Swiss Carbon rear shock
  • - SRAM XO Shifters and Rear mech
  • - XTR Front Mech
  • - Gore Ride-On cables
  • - Extralite E-Bones cranks
  • - Continental Race King 2.2 Tyres
  • Weighing it at 23.4lbs,not bad for such an old bike

daveasrc111daveasrc112daveasrc113daveasrc114USAflagDAVE YETI AS-R CARBON (Added April 2011)

I was laid off from my job in December and started to build a new ride. I found a 09’ frame for next to nothing and started searching for parts. I ended up with SRAM X-O rear derailleur, Shimano XT front, Truvativ Noir 3.3 cranks, Fulcrum Red Metal 3 wheels with Panaracer tubeless tires. X-O shifters, RaceFace SL 3/4 carbon bars, ODI Yeti red grips. RockShox SID Team up front, Monarch 4.2 rear. Look Quartz to keep contact. I also found a crack in the seatstay so I found a 10’ rear end and made it work. 24.8 pounds, yes it could be lighter but for right around $2500 I won’t worry much. For a guy who is looking for work and just turned 50 it gives me a ton of fun, and that is what it is all about.

Love the site and keep up the good work.

Not sure what to say about my '08 ASR - alloy. It's gotten me to a personal best at Leadville (11:18 in '09) as well as other endurance races - Breck 68, Front Range 50, Moab 24 hours, and is still a great bike to ride for fun. The second picture is at the top of Bergen Peak on December 26th. My only complaint about the bike is that it has an aging motor that's not very powerful...

Some pics of my Yeti. I've wanted a Yeti for 15 years and have at long last got one. From back in the day when I was 15 and was racing on a Specialised Hardrock then a GT Avalanche to a GT Zaskar.

At long long last, not a brand new frame but the ASR-C will be next year (2009)

Bike is built with XTR - front and rear mech, shifters, Hollowtech 2 chainset, XTR chain and rear cassette, Crank bro.s 2 Ti pedals, Fox RL - 100 forks, Hope Mini M4 brakes with floating rotors and braided hoses, Chris King Headset, Chris King hubs on Mavic 717, Ritchey WCS stem and post, EC90 bars and loads of other goodies\plus loads of Ti goodies. Hit the scales at 25Ibs ish.

All the best for 2009 and i'll get my DJ up when I get it built along with my ASR-C whenever funds allow.

The bike is set up with XTR crankset, brakeset, front and rear mech, Thomson seatpost, Ritchey stem, Easton Monkeylite handlebars and Stans Olympic rims fitted on XTR hubs, Selle Italia SLR and Conti Speed King 2.1 supersonic.

The weight of this wonderful XC weapon is 22.50 Lbs (complete with pedals).

The handling, balance and suspensions feel are just amazing !

At the 2008 Bristol Bike Fest, my teammate Rich was riding his hardtail and he borrowed my AS-R for the last relay of the race and dropped an impressive 1min38s from his fastest time ! When i asked his feeling about the bike, he just said : "This bike is just f***ing brilliant !" and he also added he could have dropped another 2 min. with fresh legs !!!.

A big thanks to Yetifan for the very good website and Evolution Cycles to import in UK one of the best bike brand ever.

Happy trails.   Matt Le French (from Cheltenham).

What an bit of kit. Comes in at 23 lbs. Built it myself by sourcing all the kit on the web. The spec includes Fox F120 forks, XT front, rear mech and cassette, XTR shifters, Hope mini's with 160 floating rotors, Superstar XC wheelset, (great value for the money, 1680grms), Aerozine chainset, Ritchey Pro stem and bars, and SDG I beam seatpost and Formula saddle. Took me a whole day on the Saturday to build, and saved me a stack of money. The bike is like a whippet, agile on the singletrack, and quick up the hills. Just let down by the rider. Bristol Bike Fest here we come. Let the fun begin.

Hello people,

I'm living in California, where the women are beautiful and it does get a little hot. Anyway, sometimes I just go into my garage and spend quality time with my dog and my "White Lightning". This photo was taken when my baby was only hours old, still at the bicycle maternity ward. I have been riding mountain bikes for sixteen years (cannondale, specialized, gary), but this is the greatest thing I've straddled to date. Just like my wife, this baby is a head turner. Thanks for showing me yours, now here is mine

Built up for my wife it weighs a mere 19.9lbs this bike is like a whippet. It has been built with sub 1300g wheels using Stans Race rims, so it accelerates quickly and holds speed easily. It is an impressive bike that will come in handy for this years Mountain Mayhem as it is smooth and pedals well. Very impressed. Can't see the benefit of the new carbon version as it is a stiff frame already. Watch out Scott Spark's!

very nice website. Thanks for it & congratulations , Thinking last year of changing my scalpel 3000, I became ago completely addicted to yeti.

My dream is now reality. I now own an asr-sl (carbon rearbase) since last august. I bought each components taking care of weight.

I lately bought the last items and now can show you the finished version. Actual weight is 10,1 Kg

Some other components to upgrade it are in my mind, but it will be for 2008. Weight will then be 9,4 kg

I just want to say that riding this bike is faboulus. Reactivity is estonishing.

I like my bike, I love YETI.  I plan some XC marathon in 2008 : Transvesubienne near Nice & transjurasienne.

My name is Anson Chiu, and I am from Toronto Canada. My ASR-SL is a late-year 2002 model size-small frame that I bought when I lived in Japan. Originally, it was built up with FOX-float 100 forks, and when I moved back to Toronto, I upgraded to my dream forks.

I haven't seen any bikes on yetifan with Maverick inverted forks...so here's the first :) This is the ultimate "parts" bike as the frame was built-up from hand-me-down parts from over 10 years worth of mountain bikes!!! The build list is as follows: - Maverick SC32 inverted forks with thru-axel front hub - 5th element rear shock - Hayes 9 carbon disk brake (front only) - XTR V-brake with Carbon-fiber brace (rear only) - XT rapid-fire shifter for rear (for precise shifting) - Raceface bashguard - Gripshift shifter for front (to prevent chainring rubbing) - 1999 XTR rear derailleur - chris king headset (from 1994, and 6 bikes ago...still running great!!!) - thompson stem and seatpost - profile carbon-fiber riser bars - avocet titanium-railed seat - X-pedo flat pedals (or clipless pedals, depending on the type of riding)

Simons 2004 AS-R

Essentially the bike is set up for long distance riding and marathon racing.

Its a 2004 ASR-SL frame with a King headset, Yeti ARC carbon bars, and ally stem and seat post. The Fizik Gobi saddle is the most comfortable I've had, it seems far forward but you actually sit quite far back on it. The Manitou Minute 2s are 100mm and match the 5th element really well. The shock and fork use the same Curnutt valve technology to prevent pedalling setting them off. This type of shock/fork naturally rides high in its travel so the bike is better balanced than having a fully active fork up front. Also the Minute is very light for 100mm; fractionally more than the Fox Float F80RLT that was on there before. It's a full XTR groupset the brakes are fantastic, they have so much feel and rarely lock up this is by far my favourite part of the groupset especially teamed up with the Goodridge hoses.

The rest of this groupset has had the hell beaten out of it. I'm about to fit my third set of chain rings in 12 months, rear shifting is great. The wheels are Mavic X317s with DT Swiss comp spokes I have switched to Specialized Roll-X tyres from Continentals as the I had a lot of pinch flats and lost knobbles. Also the Roll-X s are nearly £10 cheaper each even for the SWORKS. Finally I use Time pedals for as they give 13 degrees of float so better for my knees

The build is

  • 2004 Rock Shox world cup carbon
  • FSA K-force carbon seat post, bars and stem
  • Chris King head set
  • Race Face cranks
  • Hope ti hubs and bottom bracket
  • Shimano XTR combo brakes and shifters
  • Shimano XTR derrialler front and rear
  • Mavic 717 disc ,revolution spokes
  • SLR ti saddle

My partner gill ordered a new bike to replace her FRO and we got it shipped from Wheatridge cyclery colorado to our first stop in Park city utah, fantastic riding there by the way.

The ASR is awsome ,totally rocked out on the trails, and attracted major interest, anyway home in N.Ireland now, bikes now back in the garage awaiting the next adventure.

“If you go down to the woods today, your sure of a big surprise! Better known for it Dragon, last seen in the 6th Century, St. Leonard’s Forest was today graced by the presence of another legendary creature: A Yeti. Our intrepid reporter managed to catch this Yeti whilst it stopped to take in the view. Or maybe it just needed a rest after climbing up the hill. Now some would say that the markings of this Yeti, predominately pink with a touch of carbon to the rear flanks, would indicate this was a young female Yeti. Whatever the truth, this is one Yeti which is sure to keep the tongues wagging during those cold dark and wet English winters.”

Shanman’s AS-R 2005

Here it is. Shanman's ASR-SL. It came with the new '05 "enduro kit. Although I think the Minion "downhill specific" tires were a bit much they will be great when the snow starts falling here in Michigan.

I love the look of the Rocket V Yeti saddle, but my ass isn't use to it just yet. The best part of the '05 package is the Fox RP3 shock- three easy to switch to settings: hardtail, damn near hardtail and plush! It's great! The thing pedals like a hard tail until you hit a bump. It's not a lockout; it's just great damping! Do I love it? After shaving off 30 minutes off my time at the Iceman on just my third ride on the bike what do you think!

 Yours in the Tribe, Shanman

Ty’s AS-R

G'day from Australia,

My new '04 AS-r Sl. Words can't describe, but as one my my mates said: "The seat is like 2 little angles holding your ass as you rip through the forest. The ultimate in sweet ride combined with the coolness of not riding a mainstream C dale /Trek / Spec etc. The Yeti is turning heads down here!".

Couldn't say it better than that, so here it is. Full XTR, Fox f100x, Chris King, Stan's NoTubes on Mavic 717s, Eggbeaters, Easton CT2 bars, Bel-Air, Oury Lock-ons. My bike, built the way I want it. This one's a keeper!!

Jay’s AS-R

Sometimes you just know when you’ve done the right thing!

My ASR does what is says on the tin!

Many thanks to the guys at Bromley bikes, Jay

Andy’s 2003 AS-R

Pedals (Yes really! still work brillantly) , WTB Rocket V saddle, This bike is just awesome, aftersome initial problems getting the 5th element set up correctly ( I like a very firm ride ) the problem was down to a faulty pump, the ride quality is amazing.

Lightweight (around 11,0 kg), the bike is easy to ride, efficient and comfortable. I still need to ride more with it but I am already a new YETI Fan !!!!!"

I gave up some weight savings with the new Fox Forks but it was worth it. Now here is the Kicker! I bought every part on E-Bay! My total cost was $2,600. Full retail would be around $5,600! Most all of the parts are brand new. The frame had one season on it and the brakeset needed new pads but other than that everything was in new or near new shape. I just want to add that I really enjoy your site!

I gave birth to a new 25lbs 2005 ASR-SL. I gave up the Blur- blah blah and found a Yeti. See picture. I have always been a fan ever since the first Fro I built for a customer 15 yrs ago. It took me this long to come out of the closet, I have been through GT Xisang, Trek STP, Trek Fuel and finally the Blur. Blur was a sweet ride but not as sweet as my YETI.

Xavier AS-R (added 2006)

A friend of mine (former owner of an ASR-SL and current owner of an 575) convinced me to swap my Intense 5.5 for a Yeti... I was pretty much reluctant to do so as my Intense worked really nicely.  This one became my choice, and I actually wonder how come it took me so long to decide. I shouldn't have... it's so great ! And light (11,560 g including pedals).  As you can see the equipment is mainly based on an oldy but goody XTR base, including pedals, Fox RP3 + Fox 100RL + RaceFace stem + Thomson post + SLR XC saddle. Headset is in the hands of the King Chris and tires are left to Hutchinson. Riding is superb, handling and traction are great. So what I can ask for more ?
Thank you again Mr Yeti !!! (and thanks to FMF !)

Best regards,  Xavier from France

John’s 2006 AS-R(added 2006)

I got my new 2006 Yeti (w/ '05 paint job) a week ago last Tuesday. The temperature has been below 40 and it has snowed every day since then. I'm planning my first sick day for the first 50+ degree day we get! I got pretty much the stock Race Kit except I replaced the Hayes with the Avid Juicy Sevens, threw on a larger tire (2.35) up front, and tossed in some Shimano 540 pedals for good measure. It weights in at 27lbs but is indestructible! Excuse the garage photo but bad weather is fighting me again.

I bought it from the Sport Garage in Boulder (awesome bunch of guys up there!!!) after doing overnight demo's of five bikes (ASR-SL!, Truth, Blur XC, ETSX-70, RacerX). This thing literally blew away the competition. On the major downhill on the demo I smoked some guy on his downhill specific Specialized FSR because this bike just hooks up so amazing well and swallows all the bumps so you can just ride! Climbs better than my old hard tail as well!

If anyone is really interested (or bored) and wants to know more about my demos and decision criteria (and more photos!), they can check out my blog ("Guitar & Pen") at ~http://home.comcast.net/~john.bullock. They can also find info. on the naming contest for the new (ideas are welcome!) and a small prize will be given if I pick their suggestion or use one that leads to my decision).

Thought you would enjoy some shots of my new ASR-SL. The bike was ready 3/1, but I had the shop swap out the tires and seat, which took a couple extra days, and it looks like I missed another Yeti of the Month by a few days! Oh well. Keep up the fantastic work with the site, it is great.

I recently picked up a one-off frame and heard a unique story about it. It was made for a brother of someone at Yeti. It has a unique frame number, check it out! Some of the tubes are Scandium, and the shock is an RP3. the frame has hose guides, and a bearing swing arm.
